About This Series

Celebrating the hundredth anniversary of three of America's most admired coin designs, this program recreated the 1916 Mercury dime, Standing Liberty quarter, and Walking Liberty half dollar in .9999 fine gold. The Mercury dime was rendered in one-tenth ounce (3.11 grams, 16.5 mm), the quarter in one-quarter ounce (7.78 grams, 19 mm), and the half dollar in one-half ounce (15.55 grams, 24 mm), each carrying its original face value as a symbolic gesture. Designs faithfully reproduced the 1916 originals: Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty (Mercury) dime and Walking Liberty half, and Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty quarter, executed with sharp detail from modern die-cutting technology. Struck at West Point with W mintmark, each was sold individually and in a three-coin set with household ordering limits. The gold compositions transformed familiar designs into precious metal collectibles the original designers never envisioned. The program acknowledged that the simultaneous 1916 introduction of three new masterworks represented the finest artistic achievement in American circulating coinage history.
