Description

The 1960-D Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-46 documents two distinct clash events at different die-contact positions, making it an atypical die clash of unusual complexity. The obverse clash marks originate from the word STATES on the reverse, visible as incuse impressions transferred during the clashing strike. The reverse die also received a clash mark produced by the bottom of Lincoln's bust pressing through the STATES area — however, this reverse clash mark is recorded in the wrong position relative to where a standard clash geometry would place it, indicating that the two events involved different relative die alignments or collar conditions. Three die gouges are present high on Lincoln's forehead, providing an additional obverse attribution marker independent of the clash impressions. The 1960-D Small Date is distinguished from the Large Date by the size and spacing of the numerals in the date, particularly the 0 and the relationship between the 6 and 0. The ADC catalog number ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-46 identifies this as the 46th documented atypical die clash within the 1960-D Small Date sequence.
