1960-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-27
Error
Description
This 1960-D Small Date Lincoln Memorial cent displays an atypical die clash with obverse clash marks left by the NE of ONE and the CE of CENT from the reverse die. The corresponding clash transfer from the top of Lincoln's head can be seen in the NE of ONE and the CE of CENT on the reverse, confirming the relative position of the two dies at the moment of the unintended contact. The overlay analysis reveals the precise angular relationship of the dies during the clash event. A die gouge located above the designer's initials on the obverse serves as the primary diagnostic for identifying coins struck from this specific clashed die pair. Atypical die clashes differ from normal clashes in that the dies meet at an unusual angle or with lateral displacement, producing clash marks in unexpected positions relative to the standard design layout. The 1960-D Small Date Lincoln cent is itself a collectible variety, and the addition of an atypical die clash provides further distinction for error and variety specialists who study die interactions during the minting process.
