Description

Cataloged as ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-26, this atypical die clash on a 1960-D Small Date Lincoln Memorial Cent presents a fascinating case of misaligned die contact. The obverse shows a clash mark left by the first A in AMERICA transferred into the lower part of Lincoln's jacket and vest. Additional clash marks run through the mint mark and into the 6 digit of the date, left by the bottom of the letters in AMERICA when the reverse die struck the obverse die without a planchet between them. An overlay analysis reveals the precise geometric relationship between the reverse and obverse dies at the moment of contact. On the reverse, a clash mark in the A of AMERICA was left by the forward line of Lincoln's jacket, and a clash mark through the word STATES was produced by the bottom line of Lincoln's bust. The 1960 Small Date variety is itself a significant collectible within the Lincoln Memorial Cent series, and this twenty-sixth documented atypical die clash for the date demonstrates the depth of die variety research applied to this popular variant.
