1960-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-19

Description

ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-19 Events “A”, “B” & “C” This is a complicated atypical die clash on a 1960D small date Lincoln cent. The coin shows three individual tilted die clashes in different areas.This coin is in the private collection of Bob Piazza. The overlays show the relative positioning of the dies when they did clash. Note that all three clashing of the dies have different positions. 1 2 3 5 / 1 2 3 4 5 The first clashing shown above of the dies left  clash marks from the NE of ONE and the C of CENT on the obverse die. This is labeled clash stage  “A”. This is a close up view of the clash marks in clash stage “A”. The second clashing of the dies left cash marks from the word STATES under the bust of Lincoln.  This is labeled clash stage “B”. This is a close of clash stage “B”. Notice the small spur by the E of STATES. This is the right shoulder fold in the jacket. The reverse die shown above has the “bar” through the word STATES. Also notice the back, bottom portion of Lincoln’s bust clashed through the letter E of UNITED. The above image is a magnified view of the clash mark through the letter E of UNITED The third clash left marks on the reverse die of the mintmark (D), the lower right edge of the jacket and the first lower fold in the jacket. This is labeled clash stage “C”.This is the close up of clash stage “C”. Notice the “D” in the M of AMERICA, the right edge of the jacket between the A and M of AMERICA and the fold of the jacket through the lower portion of the first A in AMERICA. Notice the line that runs through the mintmark. This clash mark was generated by the lower portion of the M in AMERICA. These clash events that are found on this coin can be recognized by the “BIE” error on the word LIBERTY and the RPM which shows a split upper and lower serif on the D.
