Description
An atypical die clash on the 1960-D Small Date Lincoln Memorial Cent, ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-01 documents a tilted die clash where the dies were rotated approximately 6 degrees and slightly offset when they came together without a planchet between them. The clash transferred design elements from one die onto the other at an unusual angle. The vertical bars of the two Ts in STATES and a portion of the A can be seen clashed into the area below Lincoln's bust. The lower edge of Lincoln's bust and the surrounding field created a bar-like impression through the word STATES on the reverse. Overlay analysis shows the relationship of the clash marks left by the opposing dies, confirming the rotational offset. The Small Date variety of the 1960-D cent is one of the most studied date variations in the Lincoln Memorial series, and an atypical die clash on this already-collected variety adds a second layer of numismatic interest. Atypical die clashes differ from normal clashes because the dies meet at an abnormal angle or position, producing clash marks that do not align with the expected mirror-image pattern seen in standard clashes.
