Description
This listing documents a recurring matched obverse and reverse die-chip marker set found on 40 examples of the 2026-P Semiquincentennial Jefferson nickel. The repeated placement and geometry of the raised markers strongly indicate that the coins were produced by the same obverse and reverse die pair. Comparison of the 40 specimens also suggests progressive development in several markers, allowing the coins to be arranged into four provisional die-state groups, Stage A through Stage D, with ten specimens in each group. The illustrated primary specimen is D10-4, original coin #4, representing the latest and most developed state currently documented in the study. A review of publicly accessible 2026-P Jefferson nickel error reports did not locate another example showing this exact matched obverse-and-reverse marker configuration. This submission is presented as a provisional same-die-pair die-chip progression study pending independent review and attribution.
Die Markers
- Obverse:
- O1 – Raised die chip at or near Jefferson’s eye.
- O2 – Raised die chip on Jefferson’s cheek.
- O3 – Upper collar die chip near and to the right of the artist’s initials.
- O4 – Separate lower collar die chip in the same general collar area.
- Reverse:
- R1 – Raised die chip in the center/lower portion of the Monticello dome or roof.
- R2 – Smaller raised chip at the upper-left dome shoulder where the curved dome transitions into the roofline.
- R3 – Progressive curved, S-shaped die chip beneath or beside the first L in MONTICELLO.
- R4 – Raised die chip immediately above the O in MONTICELLO.
- All eight markers recur in consistent locations across the documented group and collectively serve as the identifying fingerprint for the probable die pair.
