Description

This 1901 Indian Head Cent exhibits a die chip positioned to the right of the letter T in CENT on the reverse. The Indian Head Cent, designed by James Barton Longacre, was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in a composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams and measuring 19.05 mm in diameter. Longacre's design features Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress on the obverse with the denomination ONE CENT surrounded by a laurel wreath and shield on the reverse, a design produced from 1859 through 1909. The 1901 issue had a mintage of 79,609,158 pieces, reflecting the robust demand for small change during the economic expansion of the early twentieth century. A die chip occurs when a small piece of the die face fractures and separates from the die surface, leaving a void that fills with metal during the striking process. Unlike a die crack, which produces a raised line on the coin as metal flows into the linear fracture, a die chip creates a discrete raised blob or bump at the specific point where the die material broke away. The location of this chip adjacent to the T in CENT places it in the reverse inscription area, where die stress from repeated striking of the recessed lettering can concentrate and initiate fractures. While minor die chips are relatively common on Indian Head Cents due to the series' lengthy production and the hardness of the bronze alloy, documented examples with specific location attribution provide value for collectors assembling die state studies of individual dates.
