2025 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-028

Description

Among the most recently produced coins in the Jefferson nickel DDR census, this 2025-P variety exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the lower portion of the large semicircular window, the letters ERICA in AMERICA, and the designer's initials FS (Felix Schlag). Brian A. Ribar attributed the variety under the Wexler designation 2025-P WDDR-028. No obverse die markers were documented, directing all authentication effort to the reverse, where a substantial set of die gouges provides multiple confirmation points: gouges above M and LL of MONTICELLO, a gouge below S of CENTS, one above F of OF, and another to the upper right of the last S in STATES. This five-gouge reverse marker constellation is unusually rich and creates a robust diagnostic framework for distinguishing WDDR-028 from the twenty-seven other DDR varieties already cataloged for the 2025-P nickel. The fact that twenty-eight doubled die reverse varieties have been attributed for a single year's production illustrates the extraordinary thoroughness of modern variety specialists, who examine freshly minted coins within months of their release. The 2025-P Jefferson nickel continues the Return to Monticello reverse design, and the architectural details of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate remain as productive a canvas for hub doubling detection as they have been since the design's 1938 introduction. The doubling on the designer's initials FS is a relatively unusual affected area for Jefferson nickel DDR varieties, as these small letters occupy a position near the rim where tilted hub displacement can be either magnified or minimized depending on the tilt axis orientation.
