2025 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-026
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Daniel McGlew and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2025-P WDDR-026, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling that produces very nice doubling across multiple architectural elements of the Monticello reverse. The tilted hub doubling is visible on the large semicircular window above the center doorway, on the upper portions of columns number 3 and 4, on the upper right portion of the center door frame, and on the door frame of the door to the right of the center door — an extensive set of affected elements that demonstrates the considerable magnitude of the hub tilt relative to the die face during the secondary impression. Obverse die markers include a large die chip to the lower left of Jefferson's right eye. The reverse carries multiple diagnostic markers: a die gouge above the E of FIVE, two die gouges below UN of UNUM, and a die break at the left side of the building. The die break at the left side of the building provides an attribution point that is both easy to locate and independent of the doubling itself. The Jefferson Nickel in 2025 carries the Return to Monticello design reintroduced in 2006, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. The architectural detail of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate provides an ideal subject for observing tilted hub doubling because the building's geometric elements — semicircular windows, columned portico, door frames — create clean reference lines against which even subtle displacement is readily measured and described. The extensive list of affected architectural features makes this one of the more visually impressive Class VIII doubled dies in the modern Jefferson Nickel series.
