Description

Representing a brand-new variety discovery on the current production year, this twenty-fifth doubled die reverse for the 2025 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel was attributed by Brian A. Ribar through the Wexler Team as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling. The doubling appears above the top step and on TIC of MONTICELLO, where the tilted hub created a rotational displacement distinct from the lateral spread of other doubling classes. Class VIII tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub contacts the die at a slight angular tilt rather than perfectly parallel, producing spread that radiates from a pivot point. Diagnostic die markers include die chips on Jefferson's nose on the obverse, a die break depression on the left building side, and a die gouge between the RI of PLURIBUS on the reverse. Cross-referenced as Wexler 2025-P WDDR-025. Twenty-five DDR varieties already documented for a coin still being struck in 2025 speaks to the speed of modern variety research, where new discoveries are attributed and published within months of production. The 2025 Jefferson Nickel features the redesigned portrait introduced this year, making these among the first varieties cataloged on the new design.
