Description

Discovered by Brian A. Ribar and awarded the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties designation, this 2025 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the reverse. The doubling shows prominently on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with closer, more refined doubling visible on E PLURIBUS. Very nice Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub during the die-making process, causing the spread to vary in width across the die surface. The obverse carries a die gouge below and between the D of GOD and the W of WE, while the reverse displays a die gouge above the V in FIVE, a die dot above the M in MONTICELLO, and a die gouge at the upper right of column 1 of Monticello. Cataloged as Wexler 2025-P WDDR-023, this variety represents one of the newest documented doubled dies in the Jefferson Nickel series. The 75% copper, 25% nickel composition has been the standard alloy for this denomination since the end of the wartime silver alloy period in 1945. As a current-year variety, WDDR-023 offers collectors an opportunity to find this die variety directly from bank rolls and circulation.
