2025 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as 2025-P WDDR-019 with the distinguished "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties designation, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits strong Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) showing on the large semicircular window, tops of columns number 3 and 4, the upper right corner of the center door frame, both doors on either side of the center door, and the IC of MONTICELLO. Class VIII tilted hub doubling occurs when the working hub contacts the working die at a slight angle rather than perfectly parallel, creating a tilt-induced spread pattern where different portions of the die receive varying degrees of displacement depending on their position relative to the tilt axis. Obverse die markers include a die dot to the right of Jefferson's neck. Reverse markers feature a die dot inside the door to the right of the center door and a die gouge inside the long right window of Monticello's facade — architectural details of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia home that provide precise reference geometry for locating these diagnostic points. The "Best Of" designation in the Wexler files elevates this variety's status as one of the most visually impressive and significant doubled die reverses across the entire Jefferson Nickel series — a distinction that substantially enhances collector interest and market demand. The 2025 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the Return to Monticello design series (2006 to date), composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse design, now restored with modifications, provides the architectural detail — windows, columns, doors — that makes Class VIII tilted hub doubling particularly visible and interesting on this denomination.
