Description

Class VIII tilted hub doubling on STATES OF distinguishes this sixteenth doubled die reverse for the 2025 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2025-P WDDR-016. Class VIII doubling results from an angular tilt between the hub and die during hubbing, producing rotational displacement that varies across the design. Reverse die markers include a die scratch inside U of UNITED, a die gouge to the lower right of I of MONTICELLO, and a die gouge to the lower portion of the right side of the building, while no obverse markers were noted. The 2025 Jefferson Nickel is particularly notable as it represents the final year of the familiar Monticello reverse design before the planned redesign, making die varieties from this terminal year of heightened interest to series collectors. Sixteen DDRs documented for a very recent date demonstrates the extraordinary speed of modern variety attribution, where specialists examine newly released coins within weeks of distribution. Brian A. Ribar's contributions to Jefferson Nickel variety research have been instrumental in building the comprehensive catalog of doubled dies, RPMs, and other varieties across the Return to Monticello series from 2006 to the present.
