Description

Discovered by Brian A. Ribar, the 2025 WDDR-012 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel shows Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the left side of the letters ICELL in MONTICELLO and the bottom of column number 4 on the building facade. The affected letters and column placement pinpoint the tilt's maximum displacement zone on the lower-left portion of the Monticello design. Obverse markers include a die gouge to the lower right of the second 5 in the date. The reverse provides three diagnostics: a die scratch through the AT of STATES, a die gouge above the long right window, and a die gouge above the long left window. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2025-P WDDR-012. Twelve doubled die reverses within the first year of a new date's production demonstrates the speed at which modern variety research identifies and catalogs hub anomalies. The 2025 Jefferson Nickel continues Felix Schlag's long-running design, now in its eighty-seventh year of production, and the Monticello reverse remains one of the most thoroughly studied designs in United States variety numismatics.
