Description

Tenth in the Wexler doubled die reverse sequence for the 2025 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, this contemporary variety carries Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible on the right side of the center door frame and on the left side of the door to the right of center on the Monticello reverse. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2025-P WDDR-010 and attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the obverse die is also listed as WDDO-003, meaning this die pair carries both obverse and reverse doubled die designations — a dual-variety combination that makes specimens especially interesting to collectors. The reverse die marker consists of a die scratch to the left of the dome of Monticello, while obverse markers follow those documented under the WDDO-003 listing. Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling occurs when the hub enters the die at a slight angle, causing one side of the design to shift more than the other and producing doubling that is strongest along one edge while diminishing toward the opposing edge. The 2025 Jefferson Nickel continues the Return to Monticello design that was reintroduced in 2006 after the Westward Journey series, and the architectural details of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate — particularly the doors, windows, and columns — provide numerous straight-line reference points where even subtle tilted hub doubling becomes diagnostically visible. Ten documented doubled die reverses for a current-year issue reflects the active and immediate die study that modern variety researchers conduct as new coins enter circulation.
