2025 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Discovered by Brian A. Ribar on a current-production Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, this variety demonstrates that hub doubling anomalies continue to occur in contemporary coinage. Cross-referenced as Wexler 2025-P WDDR-005, the Class VIII doubling shows above the center steps of Monticello, where displacement from a tilted or distorted hub created a secondary impression in the architectural detail of Jefferson's estate. Obverse die markers include a die gouge between the 25 of the date and die chips on Jefferson's chin — features that help isolate this specific die from among the many working dies cycling through Philadelphia's presses. On the reverse, three die gouges provide confirmation: one below the small left window, another below PL of PLURIBUS, and a third to the lower left of the right arch. The concentration of die gouges across both sides suggests this die pair accumulated noticeable surface imperfections during production, giving collectors multiple independent checkpoints for attribution. As a 2025-dated variety, WDDR-005 represents an opportunity for collectors to acquire a doubled die from current circulation rather than relying on the secondary market.
