2025 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

One of the earliest doubled die reverses documented for the 2025 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-004 exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling above the center steps and on the letters TIC of MONTICELLO. Class VIII doubling results from an angular tilt of the hub during die production, creating a rotational spread that differs from the more familiar lateral or vertical shifts seen in other doubling classes. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2025-P WDDR-004, the low sequence number marks this as an early discovery for the date. On the obverse, a die gouge below the left side of Jefferson's nose provides a reliable identification marker. Reverse die markers include a die gouge inside the upper left portion of the small left window and a die gouge on the upper left edge of the S of PLURIBUS. The 2025 date is significant as the first year of the redesigned Jefferson Nickel reverse, replacing the Monticello design that had been in continuous use since 1938. Early doubled dies from inaugural design years are historically well-regarded by variety collectors.
