Description

Representing one of the earliest documented die varieties for the 2025 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-003 exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling across multiple reverse design elements. The tilted hub mechanism produces doubling on the left side of the letters ICEL of MONTICELLO, inside the large semicircular window, on the lower left portions of the four columns, and in the upper right corner of the center door. Class VIII doubling results from a hub that was tilted relative to the die face during impression, creating displacement that varies in direction and intensity across the design depending on each element’s position relative to the tilt axis. Obverse die markers include a die gouge above Jefferson’s right eye, while reverse markers feature a die gouge above the T of CENTS and a die gouge on the bottom portion of the triangle above the center steps. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID: 2025-P WDDR-003, this very recent issue demonstrates that variety research now keeps pace with new production in near real-time, with attributions cataloged within months of a coin’s release.
