Description

Attributed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under 2023-P WDDR-037, this Jefferson Nickel carries documentation provided by Brian A. Ribar, whose photographic contributions support numerous Wexler variety entries. The doubling is Class VIII — a tilted hub spread — affecting the N, I, and T of MONTICELLO and the left inside edge of the long left window on the Monticello facade. Class VIII doubling presents as a slightly angled secondary impression on the named letters rather than a uniform radially spread ghost. This variety is noted to be very similar to 2023-P WDDR-009, making careful lateral comparison necessary before finalizing attribution. Two reverse die markers help distinguish WDDR-037 from neighboring entries: a die gouge below the L of PLURIBUS and a separate die gouge inside the lower left R of PLURIBUS — both verifiable under moderate magnification. The 2023 Jefferson Nickel represents one of the most recently cataloged dates in the WDDR sequence, with research still active.
