Cataloged as 2023-P WDDR-036 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files and designated as a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) — a mechanism where the working hub is angled relative to the working die during the secondary impression, producing doubling that varies in magnitude across the die face based on each element's distance from the tilt axis. Very strong doubling is visible on the large semicircular window above the entrance to Monticello, the tops of all four columns, and the top of the door to the right of the center door. Stage A was discovered by Brian A. Ribar, with die markers including a die gouge between the first U and R of PLURIBUS and a die gouge to the right of the second O of MONTICELLO. Stage B, discovered by Steven Bernatowicz, shows die gouges through the center door. The "Best Of" designation confirms this as one of the most significant doubled die varieties in the modern Jefferson Nickel series, a distinction that elevates its collector desirability and market value. The 2023 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The current Monticello reverse design, restored in 2006 after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey designs, is a modified version of Felix Schlag's original 1938 rendering of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia plantation home. The very strong doubling on the semicircular window and column tops creates one of the most visually impressive recent Jefferson Nickel varieties, making it actively sought by both variety specialists and general collectors.
