Description

Designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety by Brian A. Ribar, this 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling. Very nice doubling shows on the letters I, C, E, L, L of MONTICELLO, the lower portion of all four columns, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and both sides of the building. On the obverse, a die gouge appears between G and O of GOD, with another die gouge in the field below N of IN and G of GOD near Jefferson's hair. On the reverse, a die gouge sits below N of MONTICELLO and another above the left long window. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDR-035. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub during the die-making process, producing a spread that varies in direction across the die face. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the Jefferson Nickel series has featured this composition since 1938. The "Best Of" designation highlights this variety as one of the most visually dramatic doubled dies in the modern nickel series.
