2023 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-033
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler 2023-P WDDR-033 with the distinguished "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties designation, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling — a mechanism where the working hub contacted the working die at a slight angle during the secondary impression, producing doubling that varies in magnitude based on each element’s distance from the tilt axis. The doubling appears on the letters N, T, and I of MONTICELLO, the inner left side of the left long window, the left edge of the building, UNITED, and E PL of E PLURIBUS, along with U, N, I, and T of UNITED — an extensive distribution across multiple design elements and inscriptions confirming a significant tilt magnitude. Obverse die markers include a die gouge between the lower portions of I and N in IN, and a die gouge in the field to the left of the W in WE. Reverse markers include die gouges above the I and second L of MONTICELLO, and a die dot above the V of FIVE. The "Best Of" designation in the Wexler files marks this as one of the most visually impressive and significant doubled die reverses in the Jefferson Nickel series, elevating its desirability among variety collectors. The 2023 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The current Monticello reverse, restored in 2006 after the Westward Journey series, is a refined version of Felix Schlag’s original 1938 depiction of Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia home. The wide distribution of doubling across building elements, windows, and inscriptions creates a variety with numerous diagnostic checkpoints for confident attribution.
