2023 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-027
ErrorDescription
Documented by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDR-027, this twenty-seventh doubled die reverse for the 2023 Philadelphia-mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) on multiple architectural elements of the Monticello reverse. The doubling manifests on the lower left portion of the large semicircular window, the tops of columns 1 and 2, and on the door to the left of the center door — areas where the tilted hub created a secondary impression offset at an angle from the primary design. Class VIII doubling results from the hub being tilted relative to the die during the hubbing process, producing spread that varies in direction across the die face depending on the tilt axis. Die markers confirm attribution: the obverse carries a small die dot on Jefferson's chin, while the reverse shows a die gouge positioned between the lower portions of the first A and M of AMERICA. The 2023-P Jefferson Nickel continues the Return to Monticello design introduced in 2006, featuring Jamie Franki's forward-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and Felix Schlag's revised Monticello rendering on the reverse. Struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm diameter, this modern variety demonstrates that hub misalignment events continue to generate collectible varieties even with contemporary die manufacturing technology.
