2023 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019
ErrorDescription
Attributed by expert Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as 2023-P WDDR-019 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files, this modern Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling — a mechanism where the working hub contacts the working die at a slight angle during the secondary impression, producing doubling that varies in magnitude across the die face based on each element's distance from the tilt axis. Very strong doubling is visible on the top step of the center steps of Monticello and on the letters O, N, T, I, C of MONTICELLO — the building's inscription showing some of the most pronounced displacement on this die. Obverse die markers include a die gouge to the lower left of the U of UNITED, a die gouge to the lower left of the W of WE, and a die dot above Jefferson's left eyebrow. The reverse carries its own marker set: die gouges above the second T and the E of STATES, a die gouge in the upper portion of the R of PLURIBUS, a die dot above the E of MONTICELLO, and a die dot to the upper right of the long left window of Monticello's facade. The 2023 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The current Monticello reverse, restored in 2006 following the 2004-2005 Westward Journey commemorative designs, is a refined version of Felix Schlag's original 1938 rendering of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia plantation home. The concentration of strong doubling on the Monticello steps and inscription creates a visually impressive variety where the architectural detail of the building amplifies the tilted hub displacement into clearly defined secondary impressions.
