Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, WDDR-011 on the 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the large semicircular window above the steps and on the top of column 3 of the Monticello facade. The semicircular window is one of the most prominent architectural features on the reverse, and doubling in this area tends to produce a visible separation along its curved edge — a diagnostic location that distinguishes WDDR-011 from other 2023 varieties affecting different parts of the building. Reverse die markers are plentiful: a die chip on the dome, a die gouge above the T of CENTS, a die dot above and between the N and T of MONTICELLO, a die gouge in the field below the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a die gouge below the B of PLURIBUS. No obverse die markers have been noted. The five reverse markers make this die highly identifiable and reduce the risk of confusion with the many other WDDR listings documented for this prolific date. Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2023-P WDDR-011.
