2023 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as 2023-P WDDR-010, this Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) doubled die reverse variety was discovered on a 2023 Jefferson nickel struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Jefferson nickel, part of the Return to Monticello design series reintroduced in 2006, is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter. Class VIII doubling results from the hub being tilted relative to the die during the hubbing process, creating a progressive spread that widens from the tilt axis across the design. On WDDR-010, the tilted hub doubling shows below the large semicircular window above the steps of Monticello and on the top of column 3 of the building facade. These architectural details of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate provide well-defined reference points where even subtle hub displacement becomes detectable under magnification. Obverse die markers include a die chip in Jefferson's hair to the left of his right ear and die chips on his chin, features that help confirm the specific die pairing. Reverse die markers are numerous: a die break on the dome of Monticello, die gouges in the field above the U of UNITED, a die dot below the small left window, a die dot above the left arch, and a die gouge in the field below the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM. The abundance of reverse die markers on this variety is notable and suggests the die had accumulated significant surface imperfections during its production life. Brian A. Ribar's attribution of this variety adds to the comprehensive documentation of 2023-P Jefferson nickel doubled die reverses, reflecting the active modern variety searching community that systematically examines contemporary coinage.
