Description

Attributed as Class VIII tilted hub doubling, this 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse displays spread on the N of MONTICELLO and the left inside portion of the long left window. Class VIII doubling results from an angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during hubbing, producing a rotational distortion distinct from the lateral or vertical shifts of other classes. Several obverse die markers aid attribution: die chips to the left of the right eye and upper right of the left eye, with additional chips in the hair left of the ear. On the reverse, die breaks appear on the dome of Monticello, and die gouges above ME and between E-R of AMERICA provide further confirmation. Documented by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDR-009, this variety belongs to a thoroughly researched series of doubled dies on modern Jefferson Nickel coinage. The combination of obverse die chips and reverse die breaks makes this die pair identifiable from either side.
