Description

Focused on the large center semicircular window above the steps and the upper portion of column 3 on Monticello, WDDR-007 on the 2023-P Jefferson Nickel displays Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubling affecting two distinct architectural elements. The semicircular window — a prominent arched feature in Monticello's facade — provides a curved reference line where tilted hub displacement produces a measurable offset from the window's arc. Column 3, counted from the left, anchors the doubling in the vertical plane, giving collectors two cross-referencing points to confirm the variety. A die gouge left of the N of MONTICELLO provides the reverse diagnostic marker, while no distinctive obverse markers have been noted. As an early entry in the 2023 variety census — WDDR-007 being a relatively low sequence number — this variety was among the first doubled die reverses cataloged from the 2023 Philadelphia nickel production. The 2023 Jefferson Nickel continues the Monticello design, maintaining the architectural reverse that has generated hundreds of documented hub-doubling varieties since 2006. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under the Wexler cataloging system.
