Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and carrying the Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDR-006, this Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubled die reverse was discovered on a 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson nickel from the Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series. The coin is struck in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.2 mm in diameter. The Class VIII doubling is visible on the large center semicircular window above the center steps of Monticello, on the tops of columns 3 and 4, and above the left edge of the center steps. These multiple pickup points make this variety more readily identifiable than many tilted hub varieties that show doubling in only one area. Obverse die markers include a die chip on the upper portion of Jefferson's nose, while the reverse shows a die dot to the left of the O of OF and a die chip on the upper left side of Monticello's dome. Tilted hub doubling is created when the hub is at a slight angle to the die face during the hubbing process, resulting in differential displacement across the design. The 2023 Jefferson nickel represents one of the more recent dates in which significant doubled die varieties have been discovered, demonstrating that modern single-squeeze hubbing technology, while greatly reducing doubled die occurrences compared to the multi-squeeze era, has not entirely eliminated them from production.
