Description

Centered on the steps of Monticello, this 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel WDDR-004 exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the top step below the center door — a location where horizontal step lines provide sharp reference edges against which even subtle displacement becomes legible. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the variety is distinguished from other 2023-P doubled dies by several prominent die markers: a large die chip on the left side of the dome creates a raised mass of metal visible at low magnification, while a die gouge to the right of Jefferson's nose on the obverse anchors die pair identification. Additional reverse markers include die gouges above the E of AMERICA and a slanted die scratch inside the center door — the same architectural element that carries the primary doubling. The dome chip is particularly noteworthy, as die chips of this size on a featured design element draw collector interest independent of the doubling. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDR-004, this variety rewards examination of both the step area for doubling and the dome for the dramatic chip that gives the variety its most recognizable visual signature.
