2022 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Steven Bernatowicz and carrying the Wexler Variety ID 2022-P WDDR-009, this doubled die reverse is listed among the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties, a distinction that reflects particularly strong or visually appealing doubling. The variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a 2022 Jefferson nickel from the Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series. The coin is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a diameter of 21.2 mm. Following the 2004-2005 Westward Journey program, the Jefferson nickel returned to a Monticello reverse design in 2006, though both the obverse portrait by Jamie Franki and the reverse rendering were updated with new artistic interpretations. The Class VIII (tilted hub) doubling on WDDR-009 is described as very strong, showing on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF, FIVE CENTS, the left arch, and the left side of the Monticello building. This extensive coverage of multiple inscription and architectural elements across the reverse makes it one of the more dramatic doubled die varieties in the modern Jefferson nickel series, earning its "Best Of" designation. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the left of the L in LIBERTY. The reverse shows a die gouge to the lower right of column number 4 of Monticello. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub is tilted relative to the die during the hubbing process, creating a differential displacement pattern where the doubling intensity varies across the die face based on distance from the tilt axis. Steven Bernatowicz, who also discovered the 2009P-1DEO-001T trail die variety, has been an active contributor to Jefferson nickel variety research, and WDDR-009 represents one of the more significant modern discoveries in the denomination.
