2022 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Carrying the lead Wexler doubled die reverse designation for the 2022 Jefferson nickel, WDDR-001 exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible along the left side and center portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the entrance steps. Jamie Franki's updated Monticello reverse, in production since 2006, presents the building's facade with sufficient architectural detail — columns, pediment, door frames, and fenestration — to serve as a sensitive detector of hub misalignment during die production. Class VIII tilted hub doubling results from the working hub contacting the die at an angle rather than making full-face contact simultaneously, creating doubling that varies in intensity based on distance from the tilt axis. The Monticello door frame, with its straight vertical and horizontal elements, provides an ideal geometric reference for detecting this class of doubling because any deviation from the expected architectural lines becomes immediately apparent. Philadelphia struck approximately 659.6 million Jefferson nickels in 2022, and as WDDR-001, this represents the first and most prominent reverse doubled die variety documented for the date. Obverse die markers include die gouges located in the field just to the left of and below Jefferson's ear on the Thomas Jefferson portrait, providing a distinctive secondary diagnostic for confirming the correct working die pair. No significant reverse markers beyond the doubling itself were noted. Collectors should examine the left vertical element of the center door frame and the horizontal lintel above it under 15-20x magnification, using angled illumination to reveal the secondary hub impression displaced along the door frame's architectural lines. The door frame's central position on the reverse makes it one of the first features examined when screening Jefferson nickels for doubled die characteristics.
