On the Union Shield reverse of a 2021 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Cent, this second documented reverse cud preserves a die rim fracture that reveals how the Shield design's geometry influences cud formation. The reverse introduced in 2010 features a large central shield with horizontal and vertical lines, a banner reading ONE CENT, and E PLURIBUS UNUM above — elements that create specific stress distribution patterns across the die face. When the die rim fractures and a piece separates, the resulting cud's appearance is shaped by which design elements the fracture intersects.
