Description

Recorded in the VarietyVista catalog with pending code assignments of UVC-???? and DMR-00?, the 2021-D VDDR-005 is a doubled die reverse on the Denver Mint Lincoln Shield cent showing light northward spread on central banner stripes three, five, seven, and nine. The shield's vertical stripes, forming the core of Lyndall Bass's 2010 reverse design, provide strong parallel lines where even light hub displacement creates detectable doubling on stripe edges. The pending UVC and DMR codes indicate this variety was documented before final catalog numbers were assigned. Three die stages have been tracked. Stage A represents early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B, the confirmed mid-die state, shows small die chips on the left upper shield edge, with the obverse also at mid-die state. Stage C, late die state, remains unconfirmed. The die chips on the shield edge in Stage B serve as the primary pickup point for confirming both variety and die state. Light spread varieties on the Shield cent demand careful examination, as the doubling on banner stripes is subtle and best observed where stripes three, five, seven, and nine show faint secondary ridges.
