Description

Discovered by Lynn Morace, this 2021-D Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die reverse shows slight doubling above the 5th, 7th, and 9th vertical stripes on the shield. Die markers are documented across multiple stages: in the early state, a die chip can be found north of the P in E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse with no significant obverse markers. In a later die state, a die crack runs down the front of the forehead on the obverse, while on the reverse a die crack runs along the top left of the shield north of E PLU in E PLURIBUS UNUM. The progression from the isolated die chip near the P to the extended die crack running along the shield’s upper edge traces the die’s deterioration over its service life. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2021-D 1¢ WDDR-003, the shield reverse design introduced in 2010 features bold vertical and horizontal lines that serve as precise reference geometry for detecting subtle hub displacement on modern Lincoln Cent production.
