Cataloged by VarietyVista as VDDR-001 for the 2021-D Lincoln Shield Cent, this variety holds the primary doubled die reverse position for this Denver Mint date, indicating it was either the first DDR documented or the most significant variety cataloged for the 2021-D production run. The doubling manifests as medium spread north on central banner stripes 5, 7, and 9 of Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse — the odd-numbered vertical stripes in the center of the shield design, where northward hub displacement created secondary stripe edges visible under moderate magnification. Die stage documentation uses placeholder UVC and DMR codes, indicating ongoing attribution. Stage A represents Early Die State (unconfirmed). Stage B reaches Early to Mid Die State with a diagnostic light die crack on the upper left shield edge, while the obverse also shows EMDS characteristics — a progressive marker that helps determine specimen die state. Stage C represents Late Die State, unconfirmed. The Union Shield reverse, introduced in 2010, features thirteen vertical stripes representing the original colonies, a horizontal bar inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a banner reading ONE CENT.
