2020 Atypical Die Clash ADC-25C-2020-01-WF

Description

Found by Brian Sims and documented in the MadDieClashes catalog as ADC-25c-2020P-01-WF, this 2020 Philadelphia Mint Connecticut Weir Farm National Park quarter from the America the Beautiful series exhibits a bilateral atypical die clash visible on both sides of the coin. On the obverse, parts of the reverse design — specifically the tree and building from the Weir Farm composition — are clashed into the area around RTY of LIBERTY and near Washington's hair, creating ghostly transferred impressions of landscape elements overlaid onto the portrait. Correspondingly, the reverse shows parts of Washington's hair and very light aspects of the RTY letters clashed onto the Weir Farm design, completing the reciprocal transfer pattern characteristic of a die clash event where both dies simultaneously contact each other without an intervening planchet. The bilateral nature of this clash — with both obverse-on-reverse and reverse-on-obverse transfers visible — distinguishes it from one-sided clashes where die maintenance may have removed evidence from one face. The ATB Quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. The Weir Farm design, depicting the artistic property of American Impressionist J. Alden Weir in Connecticut, includes organic landscape elements whose curved natural forms create recognizable transferred patterns when clashed into the geometric Washington portrait on the opposing die — the contrast between natural and architectural design vocabularies making the transferred elements easier to identify than clashes between two similarly styled designs.
