2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-044

Description

Discovered by Jessy Gozum and cataloged in the Wexler files as 2019-P WDDR-044, this Jefferson Nickel Return to Monticello variety exhibits Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) visible inside the triangle above the center door above the steps of Monticello. This listing replaced the original WDDR-044 entry, which was delisted after being identified as a duplicate of another cataloged variety — a common occurrence in the ongoing refinement of doubled die reference files as the community identifies overlapping discoveries. The tilted hub mechanism produces doubling that varies in magnitude across different areas of the die based on each design element's distance from the tilt axis, concentrating the strongest effects in the architectural detail above the entrance. Reverse die markers are extensive: a die chip on the left edge of the Monticello building, die cracks inside the left arch, a die dot to the upper right of the D in UNITED, a die dot to the upper left of the first A of AMERICA, and a die dot above the first L of MONTICELLO. No obverse markers are noted. The Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2019, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The current Return to Monticello reverse design, reintroduced in 2006 after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey program, is a refined version of Felix Schlag's original 1938 rendering of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate.
