2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
The 2019 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-001 presents Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling — a category where the hub was tilted relative to the die face during one of the hubbing impressions, causing design elements at different distances from the tilt axis to show varying degrees of displacement. Very nice Class VIII doubling is visible below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above Monticello's front steps, with additional doubling showing below the triangle (pediment) above the center door and between the left column and the upper left side of the door frame. This concentration of doubling around the central entrance area of Monticello indicates that this architectural zone fell within the maximum displacement region of the tilted hub event, where the angular difference between the primary and secondary impressions produced the greatest separation. Reverse die markers include a small die dot in the upper portion of the first U in PLURIBUS and a small die gouge dot to the left of the lower portion of the left long window, while no obverse markers were noted. The Jefferson Nickel features a redesigned portrait by Jamie Franki on the obverse (introduced in 2006) showing a forward-facing Jefferson, while the Monticello reverse by Felix Schlag returned in 2006 after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey commemorative designs. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2019 in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter. As WDDR-001, this variety holds the primary catalog position for 2019 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverses, signifying it as the most significant example documented for this date. The Class VIII tilted hub mechanism is less commonly encountered than Classes I through VI, making this variety of particular interest to collectors who study the mechanics of die manufacture.
