Description

Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the 2019 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, attributed by Aaron Laramee under Wexler Variety ID: 2019-P WDDR-043. The tilted hub produced visible doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps, and also below the triangle (pediment) above the center entrance. Obverse die markers: a die dot to the lower left of the N in IN, and a die dot to the upper right of the second 9 in the date. Reverse markers include a die dot below the C of CENTS and a die gouge to the left of the F in FIVE. Forty-three DDRs documented for a single Jefferson Nickel date reflects the depth of systematic research being conducted on modern nickel varieties. Class VIII doubling results from the working hub being slightly tilted during one of its impressions into the die, creating a shelf-like secondary image that appears on one side of the affected elements. The precise die dot locations on both obverse and reverse make this variety relatively straightforward to confirm once a candidate specimen is identified.
