Description

Attributed by Michael Rusk, the 2019 WDDR-033 is a Class VIII tilted hub doubled die reverse on the Philadelphia Mint Jefferson nickel. Tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub is slightly angled during impression into the working die, and on this variety the displacement manifests below the left side of the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Additional slight doubling appears below the left side of the triangle above the center door. The obverse carries a die gouge to the lower right of the D in GOD as its primary pickup point, while the reverse shows a die dot below the I of FIVE. This variety is cataloged under the Wexler designation 2019-P WDDR-033. Rusk's attribution work on Jefferson nickel varieties complements the broader community of die variety specialists documenting the Monticello reverse, whose intricate architectural details provide numerous surfaces where hub doubling can manifest. Collectors should examine the door frame area under moderate magnification, where the angular displacement characteristic of Class VIII doubling becomes clearly visible against the surrounding design elements.
