2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-031

Description

Attributed by Michael Rusk through the Wexler Team as a Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling variety, this thirty-first doubled die reverse for the 2019 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits doubling below and to the left of the upper door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during the hubbing process, producing a rotational spread distinct from the lateral shifts of other classes. The center door and steps of Monticello provide the fine architectural detail where tilted hub doubling becomes detectable — the linear elements of the door frame act as reference edges against which the displacement can be measured. Diagnostic die markers include a die gouge inside the 0 of the date on the obverse, a die dot above the D of UNITED, and another die dot above the right long window on the reverse. Thirty-one DDR varieties for a single date of Jefferson Nickel demonstrates the scale of modern die variety research. The 2019-P was struck during the final years of the original Felix Schlag Monticello reverse before the 2025 redesign introduced a new portrait.
