Description

Twenty-seventh doubled die reverse for the 2019 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-027 displays Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible below and to the left of the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The Wexler variety identification is 2019-P WDDR-027, attributed by Michael Rusk. Class VIII doubling on the Jefferson Nickel reverse characteristically manifests in the architectural details of Monticello's portico — door frames, window edges, column capitals, and the stepped entrance — because these geometric elements provide sharp reference lines against which even subtle tilted hub displacement becomes detectable. The doubling occurs when the hub contacts the working die with a slight angular tilt during one of the multiple impressions required to fully transfer the design, causing elements to shift in an arc around the tilt point. Die markers for attribution include no noted obverse features, while the reverse shows a die scratch below the F of FIVE. Twenty-seven DDR varieties for a single date-mint indicates prolific hub doubling activity during 2019-P die production — consistent with the high volume of nickel five-cent piece production that consumes hundreds of die pairs annually. The Return to Monticello reverse design, in continuous use since 2006, has proven particularly productive for generating documented Class VIII varieties due to its detailed architectural elements. Cataloged through the Wexler attribution system, WDDR-027 contributes to an expanding catalog that demonstrates the ongoing frequency of tilted hub events in contemporary die manufacturing.
