Description

Attributed by Jeff Stanley and cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 2019-P WDDR-026, this Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling variety on the 2019 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel shows spread below the upper portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps. A large die gouge above the R of TRUST on the obverse serves as the primary obverse attribution marker — the "large" qualifier distinguishes this from the smaller die gouges documented on other 2019-P DDR dies. Reverse die markers include a die gouge below the E of FIVE and a die gouge to the upper right of the C in MONTICELLO. Class VIII tilted hub effects are particularly well-suited to the Monticello design because the architectural portico's horizontal entablature and vertical columns create a grid-like reference system where tilt-induced displacement can be precisely measured. The 2019 Philadelphia nickel has yielded an extraordinary number of DDRs — at least sixty-seven documented varieties — reflecting both the sheer volume of die pairs consumed in modern production and the intense scrutiny applied by variety specialists. Jeff Stanley's attribution contributes to the growing body of expertly documented varieties that characterize the Return to Monticello era.
