2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-022

Description

Attributed by Brian Sims, the 2019 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson nickel WDDR-022 exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible above and below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Thomas Jefferson's iconic Virginia estate, featured on the nickel's reverse since 1938, presents a columned facade with multiple doors and architectural elements where angled hub displacement creates measurable secondary images. Class VIII doubling results from the hub contacting the die at a slight tilt during one of the impression cycles, producing a spread pattern that differs from the rotational spread of Class I or the distortion of Class II varieties. Die markers aid authentication on both sides. On the obverse, a die gouge appears in the field to the left of Jefferson's right ear. On the reverse, die gouges sit between the first A and M of AMERICA and inside the lower portion of the second U of UNUM. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-022, this variety demonstrates that Monticello's architectural complexity continues to reveal new doubled die varieties well into the twenty-first century.
