Description

Classified as Class VIII tilted hub doubling, this twenty-first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2019 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel shows the doubling below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of the Monticello facade. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub during the hubbing process, creating displacement that varies in intensity across the die surface depending on proximity to the tilt axis. On the Monticello reverse, the center door and its surrounding frame provide fine architectural detail where this tilted displacement becomes detectable. Die markers support attribution on both sides: the obverse carries a small die gouge to the lower right of the E in WE and a die gouge to the upper right of the S in TRUST. The reverse shows a slanted die scratch between the O and F of OF. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-021, this variety was attributed by Brian Sims. The door frame area above the steps represents a concentrated zone of detail on Schlag's design, making it a productive area for detecting the subtle displacement patterns characteristic of Class VIII tilted hub varieties on modern Jefferson Nickels.
