2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-017
ErrorDescription
Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-017 and attributed by Evan Goldfarb, this 2019-P Jefferson Nickel exhibits very nice Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII tilted hub doubling, where the hub is angled relative to the die during one hubbing impression, produces a doubling pattern that varies in direction and magnitude across the die face — the concentration at the center door frame above the steps places the maximum displacement zone in the architectural focal point of Felix Schlag's Monticello design. Obverse die markers include a die gouge between the E of WE and the first T of TRUST, plus a die dot above the numeral 1 in the date. Reverse diagnostics are extensive: a die break on the left side edge of the building, two die gouges above and one below the M of AMERICA. The die break on the building's left edge documents a structural failure in the die face that produced a raised line on struck coins, providing an unmistakable attribution marker. The 2019-P Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. The "very nice" qualifier indicates this variety is particularly well-expressed among Class VIII tilted hub varieties, with the door frame area providing clean straight-line references that make the tilted doubling pattern visually compelling under 7x magnification. The die break and multiple die gouges provide robust secondary confirmation points.
