Description

Attributed by Brian Sims and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-015, this Jefferson Nickel carries Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper portion of the center door frame on Monticello, above the steps. Class VIII doubling results from a slight rotational tilt of the hub relative to the die during impression, producing an angled secondary image. Three distinct reverse die markers accompany the doubling: a die break along the left edge of the building, a small die gouge below the first U of UNUM, and a small die gouge between the lower portions of T and I of MONTICELLO. No significant obverse die markers are documented. The 2019 Jefferson Nickel was struck at Philadelphia using the Felix Schlag obverse restored in 2006 and the Jamie Franki Monticello reverse adopted that same year. The three named reverse markers provide collectors with a multi-point confirmation framework for separating WDDR-015 from adjacent entries in the 2019-P doubled die catalog.
