2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013

Description

Identified by Evan Goldfarb and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-013, this doubled die reverse on the 2019-P Jefferson Nickel presents Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubling inside and to the left of the triangle situated above the center door and above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from the working hub being tilted relative to the working die during the hubbing process, producing a displacement that varies in magnitude across different regions of the design — typically stronger at the edges and diminishing toward the tilt axis. The affected area on the Monticello facade involves the architectural detail of the triangular pediment, where the secondary image creates a subtle but measurable spread detectable under magnification. No significant die markers have been noted on either the obverse or reverse of this die pair. The Jefferson Nickel's Monticello reverse, restored in 2006 after the two-year Westward Journey series, has generated a steady stream of doubled die varieties owing to the architectural complexity of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Philadelphia's 2019 production used the traditional 75% copper, 25% nickel composition. WDDR-013 adds to the growing catalog of tilted hub varieties documented on modern Jefferson Nickel reverses.
